Pullet Rearing Unit, Llanfair Caereinion
Beef and sheep farmers Mark and Pauline Roberts farm 300 acres near Welshpool and as 2nd generation farmers they wanted to strengthen their business for the next generation by building a pullet rearing unit. After researching poultry housing manufacturers they chose family-owned business Powell & Co based on word of mouth recommendations.
The 300ft x 70ft steel-framed pullet rearing unit, in Juniper green, houses 38,000 pullets which are reared as part of a contract with Country Fresh Pullets, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lloyds Animal Feeds rearing over 7 million pullets a year. Groundworks were completed by Knights Construction, electrics by Iwan Jones and JF McKenna fitted out the rearing unit with the feeders, drinkers and ventilation. The shed featured 12 lines of drinkers and 6 rows of feeders. An important feature was the insulation of the unit which has 150mm on the sides and 200mm in the roof.
